Why Tijuana?

The School of Arts at UABC in Tijuana, is the most fertile and conducive field to artistic expression, not only for the professionals who contribute to this creative generation, but for the international atmosphere that can be found in a city who held the richest diversity and cultural expression of the era.

"Cultural diversity, result of the many national and international migration process, and the constant interaction with the United States is a distinctive fact of actual living in Tijuana.
Tijuana is the stage where local and foreign cultures get together, far away from their roots, finding new ways of expression and unknown ways to experience Tijuana and the world itself.
Moreover, the expanding growth of media communications in both ways of the border, and the presence of cultural and collective independent artists boost innovative projects far beyond the local field" (Ochoa Tinoco, 2009).

The School of Arts at the Autonomous University of Baja California offers at this moment the bachelor's degrees on Plastic Arts and Theater, Master of Arts, and shortly, Dance and Visual Media bachelor's degree programs (go to study programs) It also held artistic workshops and courses, covering multiple manifestations of music, dance, plastic arts, theater, some of them are offered in English.

The city itself, held more than thirty cultural festivals a year, with the presence of local, national and international artists.

It must be said that the fact of being so close to the State of California deploys a dynamic interchange of avant- gard artistic forms. Tijuana is just two hours away from the city of Los Angeles.

During the historical and significantlive broadcastingof the Regular Meeting of the UABC´s University Council on Thursday, May 31st, the opening of the Master in Arts by the School of Arts was approved byunanimous agreement, and then the academic unit became a School.

The Autonomous University of Baja California as part of its commitment to regional development, starting in 2003 with the rectory administration of Dr. Alejandro MungarayLagarda, diversifies its educational offer by implementing new educational programs with a degree level in the arts field. That is how the School of Arts begins.

Currently this School has five educational programs in Visual Arts: dance, visual media, music, and theater disciplines. The degree programs were created to professionalize the artistic activity; as a result, our graduates have been incorporated into artistic production and teaching fields. That is why it was considered necessary to offer a graduate program with the main purpose of training high-level professionals in the art field contributing to the development of different disciplines and improving their proficiency in the labor field.

In order to meet the interests of the School of Arts graduates and thegeneral artistic community, they had to work on the master's degree project. This program aims to professionalize most of the artistic disciplines, in such a way that artists with a higher academic level can be found in the entire state, giving the community of Baja California the opportunity to have qualified professionals in any of its disciplines especially in the artistic creation field in a graduate level. The Master´s Degree in Arts is basically directed towards the work production, and proposes to incorporate a variety of artistic disciplines into five specific areas: plastic arts, music, theater, dance and audiovisual media. Teachers and principals of the School of Artsbegan working on the project in August 2011.

The Master in Arts seeks to produce creative skills in the artists of our state, region and of our country, urging them tothink over the creative process and providing them tools to systematize the artistic work, so the piece of art can efficiently respondto the author´s creative needs through a theoretical and disciplinary basis. Moreover, it aims to introduce professionals into the labour market who are able to solve the current problems of production and artistic offer.

REASONS FOR STUDYING ARTS IN TIJUANA

The School of Arts of the UABC in Tijuana is the suitable and most fertile field for the artistic demonstrations, not only because of the professionals that give the basis for this creative generation, but for the multinational atmosphere of the city. In fact it is one of the cities with more diversity and cultural demonstrations that can be found in the world.

"The cultural diversity, result of the national and international migratory waves and the permanent interaction with the United States, is a distinctive aspect of the current urban life of Tijuana. The symbolic forms produced, recreated or enforced during the last decades are characterized for a multiplicity of expressions, origins and orientation. Tijuana is a setting where foreign, national, and local cultures or sectors are separated of their origin contexts and are combined with other forms or fragments from different origin, setting along the process new practices, new ways of expression and unpublished ways of seeing the city and the world. Moreover, the growth and the increasing influence of the media in both sides of the border, as well as the presence of independent and collective cultural movements, boost innovative projects and attractions beyond the local environment and the enlargement of the types of public"... (Ochoa Tinoco, 2009).

The School of Arts of the Autonomous University of Baja California in Tijuana, offers at this time Degrees in Visual Arts, Theater, Masters in Arts, and soon Degrees in Dance and Visual Media (go to program and graduation profiles). Also other cultural courses are offered with a variety of options in music, dance, plastic, and theater; all with a curriculum value (go to Cultural Courses). Similarly, many theoretical and practical degree courses (workshops) are offered in English.

The city by itself, offers a wide variety of Cultural Festivals (more than 30 per year), presenting local, national and international speakers and exhibitors, that give such multicolor influence in all its demonstrations; it should be added that since Tijuana is privileged to be in the border with the state of California, it offers a dynamic exchange of vanguards in both sides of the San Diego- Tijuana area, without mentioning that the city of Los Angeles California is less than two hours of distance, locating Tijuana School of Arts in an enviable geographical point.
